I am the Founder of Liberty Counselling York and a fully qualified and experienced BACP therapist.  I offer a safe, compassionate and empowering therapeutic approach to help you explore whatever issues you are experiencing and to help you find a way forward that feels right for you.  There is no right or wrong reason to come to therapy, if you have a need, please get in touch.  â€‹

My work in private practice and at York Mind has provided experience across a wide range of issues, including (but not limited to) anxiety, depression, trauma, abuse, identity, relationship issues, work issues, loss and personal development.

My foundational training is integrative humanistic, which means I focus on providing a safe, therapeutic relationship, which provides the environment for growth and healing.  The integrative part means that I tailor the specific approach according to your needs, blending a variety of therapeutic tools as appropriate.  For example I may integrate some creative therapy, or practical techniques to help ground your body and mind during anxiety and in trauma recovery.

My specific interests and further training have involved recent developments from Neuroscience, which help us work more with body and mind connection.  This can be particularly effective for regulation of the nervous system and emotions (which often unconsciously drive our thoughts, feelings and behaviours), and this regulation can prove very beneficial when working with anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic illness/pain.

Hello, I’m Sarah and I am a qualified therapist working alongside Lucy as a partner at Liberty Counselling. I am a naturally calm, compassionate and down to earth person. I have experience of working with people aged 16+ with a wide variety of needs. When you reach out, we’ll discuss why you’re seeking therapy and how we might work together. If you decide I’m the right fit, we will progress at your pace, working through whatever you bring to our sessions, for as long as you need.

Therapy isn't an instant fix, it requires time, commitment, and hard work. To benefit fully, you need to be willing to dive into painful topics and sit with your emotions. Just as the gym can build a healthy body, therapy nurtures a healthy mind. It's about valuing yourself and I truly believe by doing so, you have the power to heal and make changes in your life.

My approach integrates talking therapy with various skills, including mindfulness, nervous system regulation and creativity, to help navigate life’s challenges according to your needs. Mindfulness builds awareness and acceptance of the present moment, calming the mind. Nervous system regulation ensures that both mind and body are in sync, promoting grounding, relaxation and resilience. Creative activities unlock expressive outlets and new perspectives, enhancing emotional processing. Together, they create a holistic approach that empowers you to achieve deeper healing, greater self-awareness, and improved emotional stability.

I also have a particular interest in the complex challenges that can occur at transitions in our lives, such as:

  • marriage and relationships

  • parenthood

  • career and redundancy

  • divorce

  • bereavement

  • relocation

  • retirement

As we embark on significant changes in life, prioritising our mental health becomes essential.

Change might bring anxiety, confusion and uncertainty, or excitement and anticipation - all of which are normal!  However, change may also generate issues such as regret, money worries or fear of failure - which might feel uncomfortable, or even taboo subjects to share with friends or loved ones.  I believe that by unpacking your underlying beliefs and behaviours in therapy, you can gain clairty and perspective, improve your wellbeing and strengthen your relationships. â€‹
